Swirl flaps off

Swirl flaps create turbulence at low RPM to improve mixing on a diesel. The ECU drives their actuator and checks that they follow: commanded position against read position, end stops relearned every cycle. Fouled by exhaust gas recirculation, they stick, strain, then break — and a flap swallowed by a cylinder turns a repair into an engine.

Once the delete kit is fitted, the software remains: without it, the ECU sees that the actuator no longer answers, stores its codes and can derate torque. We disable the actuator control, the end-stop adaptation and the position monitoring, then remove the related codes. The engine runs its full-load maps with no trace of the missing flaps; the low-RPM difference, where it is felt at all, is handled with the right gear.

Software does not replace removal. As long as the flaps are still in the manifold, they can still break: it is the mechanical kit that removes that risk, the file only stops the ECU from protesting.

Nor does it repair anything after the fact. A flap already swallowed by a cylinder is engine work, not a calibration, and the fouling that put the flaps in that state usually comes from exhaust gas recirculation — dealing with it properly means dealing with that cause. The low-RPM torque difference does exist on paper; on the road it is rarely noticed, and never as much as a broken flap.
